Construction coming to County 9 and Interstate 74

As the weather gets nice, construction work is dotting roads around the state.

Locally, construction is planned at Knox County Highway 9 and Interstate 74.
Illinois Department of Transportation Spokesman Brian Williamsen says the project should start in the coming weeks, weather permitting.

“There’s some widening work that’ll be going on for County Highway 9 some ramp tie-ins, earth work, drainage work, things like that,” Williamsen says. And so some ramp closures are to be expected their intermittent throughout that project and then some potential 15-minute stoppages of traffic overnight on 74.”

He says that project will run off and on through next year. Other local projects include repair work currently under way on the I-74 bridge just south of Woodhull. Williamsen says that project should be done by the end of the month.

He further says people should take extra care when driving in work zones.

“Last year 46 people were killed in Illinois work zones,” Williamsen says. “On average, about 4,300 crashes a year, about 1,000 injuries or so each year.”

National Work Zone Awareness Week is going on now.
