Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series “Toyota/Save Mart 350”

Martin Truex, Jr. broke away from the pack on lap 91 and never looked back to win the 30th running of the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway on Sunday by 10.5 seconds.

On older tires, Truex was able to hold off the much quicker Kevin Harvick over the last 21 laps of the 110 lap race on the 2-mile road course, to secure his 3rd win of the season and the 18th of his Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series career. Harvick was gaining on the 2017 Cup Series champ by around 2 seconds per lap, but it was too little too late for the Stewart-Haas Racing driver. The driver of the #78 Furniture Row Racing Toyota started the day in 2nd position behind pole sitter Kyle Larson and was a factor all day leading 4 times for a total of 62 laps. Unfortunately for California native Larson, his fortunes went in the other direction.  Struggling all day he was able to salvage only a 14th place finish for the #42 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet

A.J. Allmendinger was having a strong day, winning Stage One, then shortly after that mid-race triumph, he missed a shift and blew the engine on his #47 JTG Daugherty Racing Chevrolet. The Stage Two winner was the #11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota of Denny Hamlin, who finished the race in 10th after starting 21st. The top five finishers included Truex, Harvick, Clint Bowyer, Chase Elliott, and Kyle Busch. There were 11 lead changes among 7 drivers (Larson, Truex, Allmendinger, Harvick, Hamlin, Kurt Busch, and Erik Jones) and 3 cautions for 8 laps.
