Touch-A-Truck event in Galesburg

The parking lot of the Lake Storey Pavilion in Galesburg was packed with hundreds of kids checking out a wide range of vehicles during “Touch-A-Truck” on Wednesday. It’s an annual event hosted by the Galesburg Parks and Recreation Department.

There were vehicles from Ameren Illinois Power, BNSF Railway, Galesburg Fire and Police Departments, the Illinois National Guard, Martin Sullivan, Inc., and many, many others. FM 95 was there with our mobile studio. The kids had a blast getting into it and talking on the microphone and hearing themselves on the PA speakers.

Kids climbed up into the trucks, honked horns, got into lift buckets, and found out what it was like to hold onto a fire hose spraying water. Several area preschools and schools used the opportunity as a great field trip, including schools from Galesburg, Abingdon, Bushnell-Prairie City, United, and more.

The weather was perfect and it was cool to watch the expressions on the kids’ faces as they got up close and ‘got their hands’ on vehicles that they may have only seen at a distance, if ever. Here are some photos from “Touch-A-Truck”:

Future on-air talent? This little lady seemed pretty comfortable in front of the mic.

Hundreds for kids turned out for Wednesday’s event.

Great idea for the sunny, warm morning.

Not only could kids crawl around in the cab of the fire truck, Galesburg fire fighters allowed them to check out some the important tools.

Maybe this little guy will drive big machinery some day!

Getting up close to the big trucks!

The Ameren workers wanted to see how many students it would take to fill the bucket with teacher Mrs. Witherell of Hedding Grade School in Abingdon.

Kids age 6 and under enjoyed this beautiful day at Lake Storey with their parents, teachers, and caregivers.

Shall we introduce ourselves or sing a song?

The kids at Touch-A-Truck were the first ones to check out the brand new Army National Guard Mobile Command Unit.

Discovery Depot provided some activities for the kids as well

The Army National Guard just got their new mobile unit on Tuesday. They cut the cables off and drove it to Lake Storey for Touch-A-Truck.

Inside the BNSF truck. Hmm, wonder what this button does?
