Abingdon man appears on sixth Knox County meth charge

An Abingdon man is held on $85,000 bond after his arrest with a small amount of meth over the weekend.

Kevin J. Smith appeared in Knox County Circuit Court yesterday for possession of less than five grams of meth.

According to police reports, the 55 year old was arrested Sunday during a routine traffic stop.

Police K-9 Cairo alerted to a vehicle pulled over in the East Main Street Circle K parking lot. While searching Smith, who was in the passenger seat, police found a glass vial containing a white powder.

Additionally, police found more than a dozen hypodermic syringes in the vehicle.

This is Smith’s sixth meth offense in Knox County. He was convicted of meth-related crimes in 2006, twice in 2009, once in 2011 and again in 2012. For those convictions, Smith was sentenced to prison time ranging from 30 months to six years.

Smith is scheduled to appear again in court at 2 p.m. April 18 for a preliminary hearing. He is represented by Public Defender Dan O’Brien.
